In March 2011, the Grade 1B students worked on these compositiions. The following samples were randomly selected by Ms. Paula Ashby, their teacher, to be shared with the school community. We are publishing them as they were turned in – the final draft. – Linda Amin

The Rainforest

There are four parts to the rainforest. The is the emergent layer, the canopy layer, the under story layer and the forest floor.

The biggest rainforest is in Brazil. The trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. The rainforest gives the world lots of oxygen.

Rainforests rain every day. Rainforests are hot, wet and sticky because they are close to the equator..

The rainforest has a lot of animals. Monkeys, birds and butterflies live at the top. Snakes, insects and sloth live in the middle. Gorillas, tigers and leopards are on the bottom. Birds use trees for shelter. Birds eat worms for food and birds need water. Leopards use trees for shade and shelter. Leopards need meat for food and there are lots of animals they can hunt. ---By: Hala Abu Arja

The Desert

The desert is so hot and dry. It rains only two or three times in a year. The desert plants have to be tough to live in the desert and so do the animals.

Animals go out to hunt at night when it is cooler. The kangaroo rat lives in a hole. There is not too much water, shelter or food in the desert.

The desert plants are far apart. If the plants don’t have water, they will die. The desert plants are shorter. The plants don’t have enriched soil to live. ---By: Jomana Ghanem

The Ocean

The fish live in the water because they get their oxygen from the water. Dolphins and whales are the only mammals in the ocean. They get their oxygen from the air. The ocean has salt water. The water is warm, and if it is warm the fish are colorful. This is a tropical ocean. The oceans at the top and bottom of the world are cold. The oceans close to the equator are warm.

The fish eat seaweed to stay alive. The fish use seaweed for shelter. The fish use seaweed to hide from their enemies.

There are more than 1,000 fish in the world. When we touch a jellyfish, we will get sick because most are poisonous. Dolphins help people when they are in danger. ---By: Fouad Al Jishi

The Forest

The trees are not letting the sun come in. The forest is moist and wet. The forest floor is damp. Animals enrich the forest soil. Animals help move seeds to other places where they will grow. A woodpecker uses trees for shelter and a weasel walks on the forest floor. ---By: Osama Al Zoubi

Animals and Plants Need Each Other

Plants need animals because the animals enrich the soil to grow another plant and the animals help the plants by moving, walking and flying the seed to another place.

The animals need plants for food, shelter and hiding. A woodpecker digs a hole in the tree and uses it for shelter. When the fox is walking in the forest, a seed sticks to the fox and then the fox scratches it and it falls down. The gorilla uses plants for food, hiding and shelter too. ---By: Eman Azzam

The Mammoth Hunt by Tala Kassab

Once there was a village.  The village was very hungry. The hunters of the village were worried.  It was time to hunt.  I got to go with them.  I am a Stone Age adventurer.  It was fun when I built my house with bones.  The journey was tomorrow so I prepared for the journey.  I went to the fields to get raspberries and cook them.  So then I was getting sleepy so I went to my house and slept.

Next day I made weapons to be ready.  It was time to go.  I was excited.  It was very challenging.  So we went to the forest.  “OK now this way,” the leader commanded.  I was following and I was next to the leader.  We went deeper and deeper into the forest.  I was tired.  We had to make a tent and we slept for one day and woke up hungry.  I woke up really early to get raspberries from the forest and cook them with my tools.  I gave some to the others to start off their day and so we went even deeper and then the leader commanded ‘We need to make a trap’.  So then we prepared the trap for the next day.

The next day all of us got our weapons and got ready.  I couldn’t wait.  The little kids had to watch out.  I had to get the rocks.  The leader was ready to trip the mammoths into the pit.  One kid went in the middle ready to kill it but he was not supposed to do that so the mammoth killed him when he ran to the mammoth.  Next I found a lot of rocks and put some fire on them to make them hot and burned.  It was time for the mammoth to fall into the trap.  Okay, it was running and running until it fell.  It was an adult mammoth so I got the burned rock and threw the rock.  Next the leader said, ’Get rocks and throw them.’  So we all killed the mammoth and went back to our tents and slept.

The next day we woke up early so we can go home early.  We went out from the forest and finally we found the village.  Everybody was surprised how we got back to the village safely and with the mammoth!  So we celebrated and ate the mammoth.  It was a journey well done.
